Why mine-first routing

Underground tours run in morning batches when you are fresh and queues are shorter. Temple walks and lake stops fit better after lunch when surface heat peaks.

This page is a single-day schedule. The Katas guide is temple-centric. Use this one when the mine is your main reason for the trip.

From Lahore (US visitors often fly into Lahore)

Take M-2 north toward Islamabad. Exit toward Chakwal and follow signs to Khewra. Our Lahore distance page lists roughly 245 to 260 km and about four hours drive time in light traffic.

Kallar Kahar service area is a common fuel and restroom stop before the Chakwal exit. M-2 exit detail is in motorway from Lahore.

  • 6:00 AM: Leave Lahore via M-2
  • 10:00 AM: Arrive Khewra, check in at gate
  • 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM: Mine tour (train and walking route)
  • 1:00 PM: Lunch in Khewra town or Kallar Kahar
  • 2:00 PM: Katas Raj temples OR Kallar Kahar Lake
  • 6:00 to 7:00 PM: Return to Lahore on M-2

From Islamabad

Drive M-2 south and use the Chakwal corridor toward Khewra. The Islamabad distance page lists roughly 200 km and about three hours in light traffic.

Overseas visitors landing at Islamabad International Airport often rent a car or hire a driver for this loop. Offline maps help on the final hill segment.

  • 6:30 AM: Leave Islamabad via M-2 south
  • 9:30 AM: Arrive Khewra mine
  • 12:00 PM: Finish tour and gift shop
  • 12:30 PM: Drive to Katas Raj (about 25 km) or Kallar Kahar (about 25 km)
  • 5:30 PM: Back on M-2 toward Islamabad

Katas Raj or Kallar Kahar?

Katas Raj: Hindu temple complex with a sacred pond. Allow 90 minutes on foot. Dress modestly and remove shoes in temple areas. Best if you want culture and architecture.

Kallar Kahar: Natural lake with boating and a motorway-friendly return leg. Best if you want a relaxed outdoor stop without temple protocols.

You can do both only on a very long summer day. Pick one to keep the drive safe before dark.

Day trip tips

Confirm opening hours and read visitor tips for queue timing.

Pack using what to pack. Add sunscreen for afternoon outdoor stops.

Weekend traffic on M-2 adds 30 to 60 minutes each way. Leave earlier on Saturday.
