How far is Khewra from Faisalabad?
The driving distance from Faisalabad to Khewra Salt Mine is roughly 200 km along motorway and local roads. Straight-line distance across the Salt Range is shorter, but vehicles follow the M-4 and M-2 corridor north before turning west at Chakwal.
Khewra sits in Jhelum District , not Faisalabad District. Chakwal city, your motorway exit, is the nearest major urban base about 30 km east of the mine.
Industrial traffic around Faisalabad's ring road and the M-4 entry at Pindi Bhattian slows departures during morning rush hours.
Route from Faisalabad
The fastest corridor for most drivers: take M-4 west toward Pindi Bhattian, join M-2 north toward Islamabad, exit at Chakwal interchange, then drive 30 km west on the Chakwal-Khewra road.
Alternative routing through Sargodha on N-60 or local highways is possible but often slower because of town traffic and single-lane sections. Check your maps app on the day of travel.
At Pindi Bhattian interchange you merge onto M-2. Pass Bhera, Lilla service area, and Kallar Kahar before the Chakwal exit. Our M-2 guide describes the same south-to-north exits from the Lahore side.
Follow brown PMDC signage from Chakwal into Khewra town. See location details for GPS coordinates and parking.
Day trip feasibility from Faisalabad
A same-day return is possible with a 6 AM departure but tiring. You face 3.5 hours each way plus 2 to 3 hours underground at the mine.
Many Faisalabad families stop overnight in Chakwal or Kallar Kahar, especially when visiting Katas Raj Temples the next morning. Our nearby attractions guide lists stops within 30 km.
Confirm opening hours before you leave. Weekend queues at the mine entrance add 30 to 45 minutes during peak season.
Bus and shared transport
Daewoo and other operators run from Faisalabad toward Lahore and Islamabad on M-4. You would transfer at Pindi Bhattian or continue to Chakwal by intercity bus, then hire a local taxi for the final 30 km.
Pakistan Railways connects Faisalabad to the main line at Lahore or Rawalpindi. Khewra station sits 3 km from the mine. See our train guide for through-service options.
Driving your own car gives the most flexibility for a half-day underground tour and an afternoon return to Faisalabad.
