Daily visit timings

The tourist section operates seven days a week. Gates open around 9:00 AM and last entry is usually one hour before closing. The full tour takes 90 to 120 minutes including the train ride and walking sections.

Visitor counters open with the gates. If you arrive after 4:30 PM, you may not have enough time for the complete tour. Staff stop allowing entry when the remaining time is too short.

Mining operations continue in separate zones while tourists visit. You will not notice blasting or heavy machinery on the public route. PMDC schedules tourist access around active work shifts.

Best time to visit

Weekday mornings (Tuesday through Thursday) have the shortest queues. Saturday and Sunday afternoons get crowded with families from Lahore and Islamabad. Pair timing with our itinerary guide to arrive before peak crowds.

October through March offers pleasant surface weather. Summer visits still work because the mine interior stays cool at around 18°C.

Public holiday and Ramadan hours

Hours may shorten during Ramadan, with earlier closing times, often around 2:00 or 3:00 PM depending on the year. Eid holidays draw large crowds, especially Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. Arrive before 9:30 AM if you visit during Eid week.

Friday hours have historically matched other weekdays unless a public holiday notice says otherwise. Check the PMDC notice board at the entrance on public holidays. Our contact page explains how to reach the visitor office in person.

What a typical visit looks like by hour

9:00-10:00 AM: Gates open, first visitors enter the mine and board the train. Queues are shortest in this window.

10:00 AM-1:00 PM: Peak arrival period on weekends. Entrance lines and train waits increase. Still fine if you pack patience.

1:00-4:00 PM: Steady flow. Families finish lunch and head into the mine. Underground chambers feel less packed than the entrance area.

4:00-5:00 PM: Last recommended arrival for a full tour. After 5:00 PM, staff may turn away visitors who cannot finish before closing.
