Sample half-day itinerary

A half-day mine visit fits a Lahore or Islamabad day trip if you leave before 7 AM. Below is a realistic timeline for a family of four on a weekday.

Weekend crowds add 30 to 60 minutes at check-in and the train platform. Arrive earlier on Saturday and Sunday.

Full-day Salt Range itinerary

Combine the mine with Katas Raj temples (25 km northeast) or Kallar Kahar Lake (25 km east). Do the mine first while you are fresh. Save the temple walk or lake boating for afternoon.

A full-day loop from Lahore: leave at 6 AM, mine by 10 AM, Katas Raj by 1 PM, return via M-2 by 7 PM. Add an hour each way on long weekends.

What to bring

Closed shoes with grip for uneven salt floors. A light jacket for 18°C underground. Water for the surface queue area where summer heat hits hard.

Underground safety tips

Stay with your group on marked paths. Do not enter restricted mining zones marked with barriers or warning signs.

Salt floors are uneven and sometimes damp. Hold children's hands on stairs and near brine pools.

Do not touch brine pools or taste mine water. Drinking water is available at the surface entrance only.

Summer surface temperatures exceed 40°C in the parking area. Drink water before descending underground.

Wheelchair access is limited because of train boarding steps and uneven tunnel floors.

School and group trips

School groups should speak with PMDC staff at the mine entrance at least one week ahead. Staff coordinate timing, group size, and safety briefings for large parties.

Assign one teacher per ten students underground. Hold hands near brine pools and train platforms.

Check opening hours and visitor access on the visitor hub before confirming transport.

Elderly visitors should pace the walking section. Benches are limited underground. The train ride reduces total walking distance compared to older tours that were entirely on foot.

Bring snacks for children who get hungry during the queue at the entrance. Food stalls outside the gate sell chips and drinks but lines grow at noon.
