The visitor entrance is on the main Khewra-Chakwal road. Most GPS apps find it under 'Khewra Salt Mine' or 'PMDC Salt Mine Khewra'.

Coordinates: 32.6479° N, 73.0084° E. The mine is in the Salt Range foothills, not inside Chakwal city itself.

Look for the PMDC signboard and parking lot off the main road. Buses from Lahore and Islamabad drop passengers at the same lot. Local taxis from Chakwal cover the final stretch. Agree a fare before you depart.

Khewra Salt Mine is in Jhelum District, Punjab. Khewra town sits in the Salt Range, reached via the Chakwal-Khewra road corridor that many visitors use after exiting M-2.

Chakwal city is about 30 km east and remains a common overnight base. Many visitors stay in Chakwal or at Kallar Kahar Lake resort and drive to the mine in the morning.

The Salt Range name comes from the thick salt deposits across these hills. Khewra is among the largest and longest-operating rock salt mines in Pakistan.

Directions from major cities

From Islamabad: Take M-2 south and exit at Lilla or Chakwal/Kallar Kahar interchange depending on your route. Follow signs to Khewra. Drive time is about 2-3 hours.

From Lahore: Take M-2 north toward Islamabad. Exit at Lilla or Chakwal and head west toward Khewra. Drive time is about 3-4 hours.

Getting to the mine entrance

By car: Exit M-2 at Chakwal interchange and follow the Chakwal-Khewra road west for about 30 km. Road signs point to the salt mine.

By train: Khewra railway station sits on the main line between Lahore and Rawalpindi. From the station, rickshaws and taxis cover the 3 km to the mine in 10 minutes.

By bus: Daewoo and other services run to Chakwal. Switch to a local van or taxi for the final leg. No direct bus stops at the mine gate on most routes.
