How far is the mine from Chakwal city?
Khewra Salt Mine is about 30 km west of Chakwal city centre along the Chakwal-Khewra road. Chakwal is in Chakwal District. The mine itself is administratively in neighbouring Jhelum District (Khewra town).
Do not confuse Chakwal city with the mine location. Chakwal is a travel hub and overnight base. The underground visitor site sits in Jhelum District beyond the Salt Range foothills.
Driving time is 45 minutes under normal conditions. Rain, fog, and weekend convoys slow the hill bends on the final approach into Khewra town.
Chakwal to Khewra route
From Chakwal city, follow the Chakwal-Khewra road west through Salt Range foothills. The road is paved but includes hill bends. Drive cautiously in rain or after dark.
Brown PMDC signage appears as you approach Khewra town. The visitor parking area sits near the mine entrance off the main road. Search your maps app for Khewra Salt Mine or PMDC Salt Mine.
Motorway visitors exit M-2 at Chakwal interchange and merge onto this same westbound road. Our motorway guide lists the M-2 exits and toll plazas for drivers arriving from Lahore or Islamabad.
See location details for GPS coordinates (32.6479°N, 73.0084°E) and parking layout near the entrance.
Why stay in Chakwal?
Chakwal offers the widest hotel selection within easy reach of the mine. Useful if you also plan Katas Raj Temples or an early-morning mine visit before motorway traffic builds.
Local taxis and vans run from Chakwal bus stands to Khewra. Agree a fare before departing. The 30 km trip takes 45 minutes each way.
Check opening hours the night before. Many Chakwal-based visitors arrive at the mine gate right at opening time to beat Lahore and Islamabad day-trippers.
Combining Khewra with nearby stops
Katas Raj Temples, Kallar Kahar Lake, and Malot Fort all sit within 30 to 50 km of Chakwal. A two-day itinerary from any Punjab city often uses Chakwal as the hub.
Our nearby attractions guide lists driving times and route notes for each stop from Chakwal.
