Salt types mined at Khewra

The mine produces multiple grades from the same geological formation. Food-grade pink salt is washed, dried, and crushed to kitchen mesh sizes. White industrial salt skips food-grade washing and ships in bulk bags.

Black salt (kala namak) is a processed product. Raw pink salt is heated with spices to create the dark colour and sulphurous aroma used in South Asian cooking.

From tunnel to market

Miners extract salt with explosives and cutting tools in active zones. Tourist tunnels sit in older, exhausted chambers far from blasting.

Crushed salt moves to screening plants on site. Screens sort by grain size. Food batches pass hygiene checks. Industrial batches load directly onto trucks.

Export buyers specify mesh size, moisture content, and packaging. PMDC ships FOB from Pakistan ports. Retail brands abroad often repackage bulk Pakistani salt under their own labels.

What tourists buy at the mine

The gift shop near the entrance sells edible salt packs, lamps, candle holders, and carved souvenirs. Sizes range from pocket pouches to large lamp blocks.

Street vendors outside the gate sell similar items. Haggling is uncommon at the official shop.

Economic importance

Khewra supports thousands of local jobs across mining, processing, transport, and tourism. Salt exports contribute to Pakistan's mineral revenue alongside other PMDC operations.

Pakistan relies on Khewra for most domestic rock salt supply. Smaller Salt Range mines exist, but none match Khewra's tunnel length or annual output.

Food-grade certification applies only to washed and tested edible lines. Decorative lamps and raw chunks sold at the gift shop are not labelled for kitchen use unless marked edible.
