Khewra railway station
Khewra station sits on the Pakistan Railways network between major Punjab cities. The platform is a short walk from Khewra town centre. Rickshaws and taxis cover the remaining 3 km to the PMDC visitor gate in about 10 minutes.
Not every intercity train stops at Khewra. Check Pakistan Railways timetables before travelling. You might need to change at Malakwal, Lala Musa, or Jhelum depending on your origin city.
Rickshaws and taxis wait near the station. Agree the fare to the mine entrance before boarding.

Malakwal to Khewra branch line
A scenic branch line runs from Malakwal to Khewra through the Salt Range foothills. Pakistan Railways has occasionally operated tourist trains on this route during holiday seasons.
Branch line schedules change frequently. Confirm departure times at Malakwal station on the day of travel rather than relying on old online timetables.
Combine rail travel with a morning mine visit and afternoon trip to Katas Raj if timing allows. Our nearby attractions guide covers the 25 km drive from the mine to the temples.
Train from Lahore
Lahore to Khewra by train takes longer than driving M-2 but costs less per seat. Trains run north toward Rawalpindi on the main line. Look for services that stop at Khewra or change at Malakwal.
Book through official Pakistan Railways counters or the railways website. Carry photo ID for ticket purchase.
For most families, driving via M-2 remains faster and more flexible on a day trip. See our motorway from Lahore guide for the road alternative.
Train travel tips
The electric tourist train inside the mine is not Pakistan Railways. It runs only on the visitor loop underground. Do not expect to board it from Khewra railway station.
Arrive at the mine before 10 AM even if your train reaches Khewra station early. Check-in queues grow after mid-morning on weekends. Verify opening hours before booking rail tickets.
Station porters may offer to carry bags. The walk from platform to taxi stand is short and flat.
Overnight trains from Lahore reach Khewra in the early morning. You could tour the mine and return south the same evening if schedules align.
Pakistan Railways luggage rules allow standard bags without extra freight charges on passenger coaches. Lock valuables and keep tickets accessible for ticket checkers.
Women travelling alone should sit in the reserved family coach if available. Rickshaw drivers at Khewra station know the mine gate by name.
