How far is Khewra from Murree?

The driving distance from Murree to Khewra Salt Mine is approximately 220 km, but hill road conditions matter more than the number on a map. The Murree Expressway and old Murree Road drop you to Rawalpindi or Islamabad before you join M-2 south.

Khewra sits in Jhelum District , not in the Murree hills. You leave the Himalayan foothills, cross the Potohar Plateau on the motorway, then climb gently into Salt Range foothills west of Chakwal.

Summer weekend queues on Murree Road and at toll plazas near Rawalpindi add 45 to 60 minutes. Winter snow closures block the descent entirely on some days.

Murree to Khewra route

Leave Murree toward Lower Topa and Rawalpindi on the Murree Expressway or the classic Murree Road through Patriata. Join M-2 south at Thalian or Chakri interchange depending on which descent you used.

Drive south past Kallar Kahar service area. Exit at Chakwal interchange and follow the Chakwal-Khewra road west for 30 km to the PMDC visitor entrance.

Seasonal considerations from Murree

Murree winter closures or heavy snow block the initial descent. Check hill road conditions with local traffic police before committing to a mine visit the same day.

Monsoon rain makes the Chakwal-Khewra hill road slippery. Allow extra time on the final 30 km west of Chakwal during July and August.

Staying overnight near the mine

Chakwal city offers hotels within 30 km of the mine and is a better base than attempting a Murree-Khewra loop in one day.

Kallar Kahar resorts beside M-2 sit halfway between the twin cities and Chakwal exit. Useful if you want a lake stop before the mine.
