How far is Khewra from Sialkot?

The driving distance from Sialkot to Khewra Salt Mine is roughly 250 km. That figure follows paved roads to the PMDC visitor entrance, not a straight line across the Salt Range.

Khewra sits in Jhelum District , west of Chakwal city. Sialkot is in northeast Punjab, so your trip crosses the industrial belt around Wazirabad and Gujrat before you reach the motorway.

Weekend traffic near Sialkot Cantt and the export zones along the airport road often adds 20 to 40 minutes to the first hour. Check our opening hours before you lock in a departure time.

Sialkot to Khewra via M-2 corridor

Leave Sialkot on the Sialkot-Wazirabad Road (N-5 corridor) or the newer Sialkot Expressway link toward Daska and Pasrur. Both routes feed into Wazirabad, where you pick up the M-2 access near Kharian.

Drive south on M-2 toward Lahore. You pass the Gujrat and Dina interchanges, then Bhera. The Lilla service area is a common fuel stop before Kallar Kahar Lake, which sits right beside the motorway east of Chakwal.

Exit at Chakwal interchange and turn west on the Chakwal-Khewra road. Follow brown PMDC signage through Salt Range foothills for about 30 km. Our motorway guide lists the same M-2 exits and toll plazas from the opposite direction.

GPS apps label the destination as Khewra Salt Mine or PMDC Salt Mine. Coordinates near the entrance: 32.6479°N, 73.0084°E.

Driving tips for Sialkot travellers

Start before 6:30 AM if you want a same-day return with time underground. Factory shift changes around 7 to 8 AM slow traffic on Sialkot's ring roads and the link toward Wazirabad.

Fill fuel in Sialkot or at an M-2 service area. Petrol pumps thin out once you leave the Chakwal interchange on the winding road toward Khewra.

Download offline maps. Mobile signal drops in parts of the Salt Range. See location details for parking and the mine entrance layout.

Bus, train, and overnight options

Daewoo and Faisal Movers run from Sialkot toward Lahore and Rawalpindi. You would change at a motorway city and continue to Chakwal by bus or taxi for the last 30 km.

Pakistan Railways serves Khewra station on the main line, about 3 km from the mine. Trains from the Sialkot direction usually require a change at Lahore or Rawalpindi. Our train guide lists which services stop at Khewra.

Many Sialkot families drive one way and stay overnight in Chakwal or Kallar Kahar, especially when combining the mine with Katas Raj Temples the next morning.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Khewra Salt Mine from Sialkot?
Approximately 250 km by road, about 4 hours under normal motorway traffic.
Which motorway exit do I use from Sialkot?
Join M-2 near Wazirabad/Kharian, drive south, and exit at Chakwal interchange. Then follow the Chakwal-Khewra road west for 30 km.
Is Sialkot farther from Khewra than Gujranwala?
Yes, slightly. Sialkot adds roughly 20 km because you drive northeast first before turning south on M-2. Gujranwala sits closer to the motorway spine.

Yes. The expressway link shortens the run to Wazirabad compared with older city-centre roads. It still feeds the same M-2 southbound corridor toward Chakwal.
Is a day trip from Sialkot realistic?
Possible with a before-dawn departure. Allow 4 hours each way plus 2 to 3 hours at the mine. An overnight stop in Chakwal is easier on weekends.
Is the mine in Sialkot District?
No. Khewra is in Jhelum District. Chakwal city, 30 km east of the mine, is the usual motorway exit and overnight base.
