How far is Khewra from Peshawar?

The driving distance from Peshawar to Khewra Salt Mine is approximately 280 km along M-1, M-2, and local roads. That is longer than the Islamabad trip because you cover the full M-1 run from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa into Punjab first.

Khewra sits in Jhelum District , not KPK. Chakwal city, your motorway exit, lies in Punjab about 30 km east of the mine.

Friday afternoon traffic near Peshawar Torkham Highway junction and the M-1 toll plazas adds 30 to 45 minutes during peak hours.

Route from Peshawar

Leave Peshawar on M-1 (Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway) south toward Burhan interchange. Pass through the Attock-Khurd area and the hills approaching Rawalpindi.

At Burhan or the Islamabad link, join M-2 south toward Lahore. Drive past Chakri, Kallar Kahar service area, and exit at Chakwal interchange.

Turn west on the Chakwal-Khewra road for 30 km through Salt Range foothills. Our Islamabad distance page describes the same M-2 southbound segment from the twin cities.

Follow brown PMDC signage into Khewra town. See location details for GPS coordinates and parking near the mine entrance.

Visit planning from KPK

A same-day return from Peshawar is possible but demanding. You face 4.5 hours each way plus 2 to 3 hours underground. Most KPK families prefer an overnight stay in Chakwal or the Islamabad region.

Winter fog on M-1 near Attock delays morning departures. Check motorway advisories before you leave during December and January.

Confirm opening hours and read our visit planning guide for packing tips and crowd patterns.

Bus and train from Peshawar

Daewoo and other operators run from Peshawar to Rawalpindi and Islamabad on M-1. Continue south to Chakwal by intercity bus, then hire a local taxi for the final 30 km to the mine.

Pakistan Railways connects Peshawar to Rawalpindi and Lahore. Khewra station sits 3 km from the mine on the main line. See our train guide for through-service options.

Combining Khewra with a Islamabad city stop or Katas Raj Temples works well on a two-day itinerary from Peshawar.
