How far is Khewra from Bahawalpur?

Road distance from Bahawalpur to the PMDC visitor entrance is near 480 km. That crosses southern Punjab, the Multan plain, and the central motorway belt before the Salt Range climb west of Chakwal.

Khewra is in Jhelum District, far north of Bahawalpur Division. Chakwal city is the usual motorway exit, still 30 km short of the mine.

Summer heat on the southern motorway sections pushes many drivers to start before dawn. December fog in the Multan-Lahore corridor can slow the middle leg of the journey.

Bahawalpur to Khewra via Multan and M-2

Leave Bahawalpur on M-5 north toward Multan. The Ahmedpur East and Zahir Pir service areas are common first fuel stops.

Continue through Multan and connect toward Lahore on M-3 or M-4 depending on current NHA routing and your maps app. Both corridors eventually feed M-2 northbound.

On M-2, pass Bhera, Lilla, and Kallar Kahar. Exit Chakwal interchange and drive west 30 km on the hill road to Khewra town.

Long-drive advice from Bahawalpur

Split the trip. Driving 6.5 hours each way in one day leaves little energy for the underground tour. Plan one night near Chakwal if possible.

Carry extra water and snacks. Service areas thin out on some Multan-Lahore connectors compared with the dense M-2 north section.

Check weather and opening hours before the final leg. Monsoon rain can make the Chakwal-Khewra road slippery even when motorways stay open.

Train and bus from Bahawalpur

Pakistan Railways runs Bahawalpur to Lahore and Rawalpindi services. From Rawalpindi or Lahore you still need road transport to Chakwal and the mine.

Daewoo coaches connect Bahawalpur with Lahore and Islamabad. A two-day itinerary (coach north, taxi to mine, return next day) beats a single marathon drive for many travellers.

Compared with Multan to Khewra, Bahawalpur adds about 130 km and two hours. Multan drivers join the same M-2 corridor farther north.
